Who Am I?
In the Myth of Normal, Gabor Maté states that this essential question definitively belongs in a book about health. “The relative health of a life-form is a function of its essential needs being met, or not met.” (Maté. The Myth of Normal. pg 115). We need to know what we need to be ourselves. We need to know what we need to be authentically ourselves.
Our basic needs and potentials are encoded in our biology. Our nature, according to Maté unfolds depending on how those needs are met, how those potentials are encouraged or frustrated. Our environment is the deciding factor in how well our needs and potentials are met or frustrated.
I will often ask my clients to list their needs during one of our first sessions and then spend succeeding sessions helping those clients analyze whether those needs are in fact their authentic needs. What do you need in your life in order to be authentically yourself? Comment below.
