Our Genes Don’t Determine Our Destinies

Here’s a piece of good news for everyone who is worried about the less-than-optimal genetic makeup they may have inherited from parents who struggle with disease. Modern science, particularly since the advent of the Human Genome Project, has found that genes don’t account for most illnesses (Maté. The Myth of Normal. 2022). In other words, our genes don’t determine our destinies.

Our genes respond to their environment by turning “on” and “off” in response to stimulation from outside of our bodies. Our circumstances influence how our genes adjust to our environment. So our circumstances, environments and genes together influence our lives.
