Depression
Many people seek counselling for depression. I always interview my clients to try to ascertain the cause of their depression and determine the best course of treatment.
In many cases our discussion reveals a high occurrence of familial depression (heritability) going back generations. Sometimes the depression is triggered by work stress, unrelenting anxiety or illness. Most often though it is a combination of factors, such as heritability combined with job stress, which is responsible for my clients’ depression. Many high-functioning, depressed clients freely admit to feeling “burnt-out.” During our discussions, I help my clients analyze their situation and I help them assess whether they need some time to recoup their mental and emotional strength. Digging into the cause of depression is a little bit like going on a treasure hunt. The clients are often delighted to uncover the cause of their illness and together, we map out a plan to address it.
