The Effects Trauma has on Our Body

Gabor Maté asserts that trauma has the unsettling effect of separating us from our body. After a traumatic experience, our body isn’t a comfortable place for us to live and so we dissociate; we escape into a world in our minds and we live there.

Did you escape into daydreams as a child? Do you still daydream to escape living in a reality you don’t like? If you did, or do, there is a very good chance you have experienced trauma. This coping mechanism works well to help us survive during the time of trauma, but as time passes it becomes less helpful. Coping mechanisms like escaping into daydreams, harden over time into unsuitable responses which result in chronic suffering and even disease.
