Interpersonal biology

Our minds and bodies are so closely interwoven that Maté refers to them as the bodymind. He points out that our bodyminds are shaped by factors which are external to us. Modern medicine’s focus on the body and its internal processes therefore misses the influence of the mental, emotional, social and natural environments on the body.

Modern medicine is only now starting to acknowledge the benefits of holistic healing and is starting to accept of traditional healing practices. In psychology we now talk about a biopsychosocial framework for healing in mental health.

How has your external environment influenced your bodymind? Do you have biopsychosocial supports in place for your mental health?
