Does Depression Define You?

The Miracle Question is a question I often pose to my clients who present with specific problems. It is a version of The Miracle Question from Solution Focussed Therapy. For a client presenting with depression, the point of the question is to help the client imagine their life without the problem. This question has led to much self-analysis on the part of the client and some, to their shock, realize they can’t imagine a life without the depression that has become such an integral part of their lives. They identify so closely with depression that it is literally who they are. “I am (insert client name), I am depressed”...

What is your answer to this question? “Imagine when you go to bed tonight a miracle occurs and when you wake up in the morning, you don’t have depression anymore. What is the very first thing you would notice that is different in your life?”

Who would you be without depression? Let’s talk about that at heidiredlcounselling.ca.
